Quotes of the Day(今日名言警句)这个网站我隔三差五就要都要浏览一次,有时候看到有意思的名人名言就记下来,其中一部分翻译出来收入了中国书店出版的《东方文化西方语》,利用每一页的纸面页脚用小字排出,提高了本书的“信价比”(“信价比”这个词是方雨教授“发明”的,指书刊信息量与价格之比)。比如法国诗人保罗•瓦莱里(Paul Valery,1871 – 1945)的这句话就很有趣:“书籍和人类一样有共同的敌人:火灾、潮湿、动物、天气还有他们自己的内涵(Books have the same enemies as people: fire, humidity, animals, weather, and their own content)”。 不过,这个网站上的名言警句有时候读起来也让人纳闷以致于郁闷,因为它们号称是Chinese Proverb(中国谚语),但我作为中国人却不甚了了,想不出来这些Chinese Proverb 到底对应哪些“中国谚语”。比如下面这些Chinese Proverb,我可以大致翻译出其意义,但是还没有想出对应的中文原句:
